We provide sexual health educators with the support they need to deliver comprehensive sexuality education, by offering training and workshops, in-person and virtually, on a variety of sexual health topics.

Join middle school educators in exploring Maine Family Planning’s sexual health education resource, Middle School Sexual Health Scope and Sequence. This curriculum resource provides flexibility to meet the varying needs of the middle school health educator serving grades 6 – 8.  The curriculum resource allows middle school educators to select developmentally-appropriate, content specific lessons and activities that fit the needs of their classrooms. The curriculum resource is aligned with Maine Learning Results for health education and the National Sex Ed Standards and includes lesson plans on the following topics: puberty & sexual adolescent development; gender identity and expression; sexual orientation and identity; healthy relationships; interpersonal violence; consent & communication and sexual health.

Whether you are starting with an emtpy slate, or come with your own tools of the trade, join us and fellow educators for this curriculum training on how to deliver facutal, relevant, grade-appropriate sexual health education to youth in grades 6-8.

As a result of the training, participants will:

  • Understand the content and methods recommended for a middle school sexual health program. 
  • Practice how to identify and access specific activities and lesson plans within the Middle School Sexual Health Scope & Sequence that meet the needs of your middle school students.
  • Share resources and network with educators teaching middle school health from around the state. 
  • Create a customized scope & sequence plan for delivering sexual health lessons to your students in grades 6-8.
  • Leave with a printed copy of the Middle School Sexual Health Scope & Sequence curriculum and links to lesson plans that will provide a foundation for middle school youth to develop into sexually healthy teens.

Best-Practices-2020-Edition-Banner

December 8-9, 2025 | 8:00AM – 3:00PM

Join fellow health educators at this 2-day, in-person training to learn more about Maine Family Planning’s Best Practices in STI/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention curriculum and strategies for delivering the sexual health lessons with youth. Gain knowledge, comfort, and skills to teach this 10-lesson curriculum that is aligned with the Maine Learning Results for Health Education and the National Sex Education Standards. The contents and format of the curriculum addresses the sexual health needs of youth ages 13-18.

Training Objectives

During this training, participants will:

  • Explore specific lessons and activities included in the curriculum, such as: communication and consent, healthy relationships, STI prevention, barrier methods and birth control, and sexual health services. 
  • Discuss strategies for teaching sexual health using trauma-informed and inclusive practices.
  • Increase comfort level and demonstrate skills in delivering lessons on sexual health topics.
  • Identify and practice responding to student questions.
  • Share tools, activities, and resources with others who are teaching sexual health. 

Who should attend?

Maine school and community educators, school nurses and counselors committed to providing sexual health education to youth ages 13-18.

Cost

Thanks to funding from the Maine Dept of Education, there is no charge to register for Maine educators. Participants will receive a printed copy of the curriculum along with resources needed to deliver the lessons. Breakfast and lunch both days is included.

Contact Hours

Participants who attend both days will receive a certificate for 12 contact hours.

All of our locations remain open for sexual and reproductive health care. Three clinics (Houlton, Presque Isle, and Ellsworth) will end their primary care services on October 31st due to federal funding cuts, but those clinics remain open.
