Maine Family Planning’s Prevention Program promotes youth sexual and reproductive health by strengthening school and community-based sex education. We provide technical assistance, innovative resources, and professional development opportunities to leaders working with K-12 youth to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Identify Needs

Our Prevention Coordinators can work to identify the needs of youth you serve and can assist in selecting a sexual health program or curriculum. Our team utilizes the latest local and state data to evaluate public health needs and works with schools and community organizations to meet students where they are.

Assessment & Improvement

Our Prevention Coordinators can help ensure that your program or curriculum is being carried out successfully, resulting in positive changes in student knowledge, skills, and intended behaviors. We utilize student pre- and post- tests to gauge the effectiveness of our program and work with educators to make any adjustments needed to achieve results.

Teaching Resources

Our Prevention team develops comprehensive sexuality education teaching resources that are available onlinePuberty Happens is a 3-unit curriculum designed to educate students in grades 4-6 on the physical, social, and emotional changes of puberty. Middle School Scope and Sequence identifies learning objectives and topics appropriate for the middle school grades 6-8 with lessons, resources, and educational videos. Best Practices in STD/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention is a 10-lesson curriculum that addresses the sexual health needs of youth in grades 8-12.

Technical Assistance

Our Prevention team can work to improve your existing sexuality education program or curriculum and align it with the Maine Health Standards and National Sexuality Education Standards. Our Prevention Coordinators provide one-on-one assistance to educators and youth-serving professionals working to implement comprehensive sexuality education.

Professional Development

Our annual trainings, workshops and statewide conference keep educators up-to-date on relevant topics in sexual health education. Our Prevention Coordinators can provide specialized trainings for your school or organization upon request.

Community Outreach

Our Prevention team understands the importance of community in achieving positive health outcomes for youth, which is why community outreach is a key goal of our program. Our Prevention Coordinators provide education at community health events and offer support to communities advocating for comprehensive sexuality education. Our team can refer your school or organization to local resources in your community to address a wide range of prevention needs among the youth you serve.
