Maine Family Planning’s Prevention Education Program promotes positive, healthy sexual development by ensuring that youth have access to school- and community-based sex education. We provide technical assistance, innovative resources, and professional development opportunities for educators to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Our Prevention Education team can help identify the needs of youth and assist you in selecting developmentally- and age-appropriate sexual health education resources and curriculum to meet those needs.
Our Prevention Education team can help review and expand your existing program or curriculum and align it with the Maine Health Standards and National Sex Education Standards. We can provide one-on-one assistance to educators and youth-serving professionals in implementing comprehensive and inclusive sexuality education.
Through assessment tools and strategies, our Prevention Education Team can help ensure that the sexual health education you provide results in positive changes in student knowledge, skills, and intended behaviors and aligns with learning objectives and health education standards. We can support you in making adaptations to your sexual health lessons to meet your specific needs.
Our Prevention Education team develops comprehensive sexuality education resources that are available online, including curricula and tip sheets. Puberty Happens is a curriculum designed for students in grades 4-6 on the physical, social, and emotional changes of puberty. Middle School Sexual Health Scope and Sequence identifies learning objectives and topics appropriate for grades 6-8 with recommended lessons, resources, and educational videos. Best Practices in STI/HIV and Pregnancy Prevention is a curriculum that addresses the sexual health needs of youth in grades 8-12.
Our annual trainings, workshops, webinars, and statewide conference keep educators up-to-date on relevant topics in sexual health education. Upon request, our Prevention Education team can design and deliver specialized training for your school or organization based on your specific needs.
We understand the importance of community in achieving positive health outcomes for youth, which is why community outreach is a key goal of our program. Our Prevention Education team provides education at community health events and offers support to communities advocating for comprehensive and inclusive sexuality education. Our team can refer your school or organization to local community resources to address your prevention and educational needs.
