Harm Reduction 101 & Naloxone Training

February 9, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Maine Family Planning is partnering with Maine Access Points & The Commons at Central Hall to bring this engaging, community-based public health education event to Dover-Foxcroft.

The program will include a review of the basic principles of harm reduction, a practical demonstration of how to administer Naloxone to someone experiencing an overdose, as well as discussion of proposed policy changes related to substance use & treatment being considered in the legislature this session.

WHAT IS HARM REDUCTION?
Harm Reduction is a set of practices that meet people where they are at & help lessen harm of substance use & keep people alive & as safe as possible while using. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that ordinary people can administer to save someone’s life during a drug overdose.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Overdose deaths in Maine exceeded 400 in 2017, meaning we lost more than one Mainer per day to this epidemic. Every overdose death is a preventable death. Stigma & lack of services–especially in rural & low-income areas–lead to more death & grief. Harm reduction offers practical interventions paired with compassion to keep ourselves & our neighbors alive & safe.
